Another Movie Review – Watchmen

Hey all, Dylan here with your weekly review, and this week we shall dive into the strange world of Watchmen, Zack Snyder’s latest cinematic opus based on the super-popular graphic novel of the same name. Watchmen is based in an alternate version of 1985, where the USA and Soviet Union are armed to the teeth with Weapons of Mass Destruction and not afraid to use them…BUT, thats where this big, blue, atom-man named Doctor Manhattan, played by Billy Crudup who is on the USA’s side, the Reds are afraid to use those explodie thingies called nukes as He can atomize people at will in a spectacular fashion, Doctor Manhattan can also take things apart telepathically and turn anything to…err…anything and He was a former member of the disbanded/retired “Superhero” group called the watchmen, consisting of Nite Owl the 2nd, a gadget using, owl costume wearing hero, Rorschach, an unhinged brawler who went quite nutty after a certain “event” in his vigilante life, Silk Spectre the 2nd, who is…err…..the sexy one, The Comedian, a complete psycho, who uses lethal force making his freakin’ coffee in the morning and finally, Ozymandias, the smartest man in the world.

The Story, one of the Watchmen is murdered in his own home, Rorschach and Nite Owl are trying to investigate the case, putting on their old costumes, well, Nite Owl does, Rorschach always has his on.
Another story branch, Jon Osterman/Dr. Manhattan is losing faith in humanity as people are nasty and horrible  , and leaves for Mars (He’s a real man, He doesn’t need oxygen) and if the commies find out, we’re screwed because they won’t be scared of Dr. Manhattan atomizing their asses. 

The camerawork in this movie is simply beautiful, all dark and brooding with the main colours, blue and yellow and the fight choreography is great with flips and punches and killing and happy, fun things like that and also note, the 18 rating on this movie is WELL deserved, with rape scenes and obscene violence with very detailed injuries and full on sex scenes and the like.

The music is very tasteful, it probably has the best soundtrack I’ve seen for a movie, with Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and My Chemical Romance headlining in the film, It also goes very well with some of the scenes.

I also loved this movie, but should only be viewed by people who have previous comprehension of the graphic novel or have read it altogether, and i’ll say again, BEWARE! this movie’s 18 rating is well deserved, my rating is 4.3/5 stars, check it out!

One Of My Reviews – The Final Destiation – 3D!

(Note, This is one of my earlier pieces) I went to see the 4th installment in this long running teen horror series, The Final Destination (In 3D nonetheless), directed by David. R. Ellis and Starring Bobby Campo and Shantel VanSanten. This movie follows almost the exact same plot as the others in the series, A group of teenagers are having a day out, but one has a premonition (vision) of the group getting slaughtered in an accidental, yet violent looking way, the protagonist then leads them out and Death picks them off in the exact order they died if the incident at the start were to take place, overall, it was a good plot the first two times, now it’s just getting old.
This movie follows Nick, a 19-20 something man with his girlfriend Lori (VanSanten), his best friend Hunt (Nick Zano) and Janet (Haley Webb) having a relaxing day out at the local NASCAR track, things are looking promising for Nick, He has a loving girlfriend, two great friends and a clear future, that’s all about to change when Death* decides to intervene in the event by making one of the pitstop engineers forget their screwdriver in the car’s exhaust, this makes the screwdriver lay on the middle of the track and a car comes along in spectacular fashion due to the digital 3D and then it’s tires pop, the car goes flying into the crowd with some spectacular stunt choreography and people (including Nick and his friends) die, this is not a spoiler however, this is just a vision that Nick has, and then He kicks and screams his way out of the Stadium, followed by a group of angry fans….then…guess what? The crash happens. thats all i’m gonna say about the films events for now.

The Pros
This series has come quite far with 3 sequels and it has been running for 10 years! But this isn’t very uncommon with most famous horror franchises running for nearly 10 sequels! See Friday the 13th and Nightmare On Elm Street movies and you’ll see what I mean.
Also, the kill scenes remain spectacular as ever, with blood and guts spraying everywhere and fun, happy things like that, most of these scenes involve normal, everyday items/occurences including a rock and a lawnmower, go figure for yourself, if you guess right, i’ll give you a virtual cookie.

The Cons
Now, where shall I begin….Now you’ll say, Dylan you amazing man, you’ve been praising this movie, it may seem like that but those things are just a given for any FD movie, the acting in this movie is a complete catastrophe here with actors overly emphasise the swear words, which in my opinion, is just too much at times.
The Actors in this movie a very unknown to the general casual movie audience, but again, this again is a given to horror movies as of late. The Actors aren’t great, like…at all, Nick Zano, who portrays Hunt in the movie, is just a stereotypical muscle man who just wants sex and things like that, but their lines are choppy and weak, especially when Nick is trying to explain about his vision, he says “i saw, this thing, ugh” and when asked about who died after a certain character, he just says without thought or pause, “I can’t remember”

The Camerawork
Now, this is the category i can’t say much about, as I saw it in 3D, the 3D was spectacular, it’s just that, they never did anything amazing with it, i mean, all you usually got was the odd blood splatter or flying projectile coming out of the screen.

The Verdict
Straight up, I’m gonna say that this movie was awful (remember, this is my own opinion)
But remember guys, i’m not saying don’t watch this movie, by all means, go see it, it is hugely entertaining for short term thrills and chills, I was laughing my ass off in my seat
my score for The Final Destination is 2.4 stars
*Death in this movie has no physical manifestation, just moving objects and forces of nature, so don’t expect Death to come around the corner and pull out a pistol

YAY! iMac!!!!

It’s all mine! And when I say iMac it’s not a nice new aluminium one, it’s an iMac G3. It’s white has a 40 GB HDD, CD something drive and runs Mac OS X 10.2.5 I tried to install Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4) but it didn’t work. Heres a picture of it.

Irish internet speeds

My dad told me over the phone when I asked whether I should bring over our Airport Express to Ireland that I wouldn’t need it because internet speeds in Ireland are usually faster than in the UK. So after getting the internet properly sorted over here in my grandparents house I tested the internet speed on a well known website called speedtest.net. And the results shocked me, here they are:

Now, tell me what you think of those.

I saw this and thought “well thats crap!” and I went onto my summary and in my local area I should be getting at least 2.56 mbps download speed from eircom, I should be getting 0.27 mbps upload speed from eircom. So I showed my granddad and he was also quite surprised. So I think eircom might be getting a ring soon to see about this.

Away

As I type this I am on a ferry on my way to Belfast so that I can travel down to the south. I’m going to be there for 2 weeks but I’ve brought my dad’s laptop and I’ll be somewhere that has Wi-Fi so I’ll still be tweeting and posting here.

Hi everyone, it’s me as you know. I haven’t had any replies yet about the job offer I’ve given you all. But I’m still waiting. Anyway more to the point, THIS BLOG IS OFFICIALLY ONE YEAR OLD! Yep, but today isn’t the blogs birthday, nope that was the 9th, I kinda forgot. In other news I’m now a Ubuntu convert, yep, a few months ago I would have ben ashamed to even use Ubuntu. But I saw a magazine (Linux Format) doing a Ubuntu special and I had some cash, it cost £10, and it was the best £10 I ever spent! here’s a screenshot of my desktop:

And the Palm Pre is definetely coming oin the UK! It says on the o2 website that it’ll only be available on o2. So thats gonna be weird having two massive rivals on the same network. iPhone and Pre. So I’m going to do a special post when I boot Windows tomorrow. The only problems with Ubuntu, Flash and GIMP. I hate GIMP, I love Paint.net!
